Amazon pitches better-than-ever cloud deals:

If you didn’t know better, you might think that Amazon Web Services is worried about the competition. Amazon, which makes a habit of cutting prices on its cloud services and offering all sorts of price options, is being more aggressive than usual in pushing customers to use and keep using its cloud services.

Developers: Here’s your updated backend ecosystems roadmap

Developers: Here’s your updated backend ecosystems roadmap:

Keeping track of the ecosystems available to software developers is no mean feat. Sravish Sridhar, CEO of Kinvey, started mapping them out in his Backend As A Service Ecosystem “subway” map six months ago. And now he’s updated that map to add another category — mobile enterprise application platforms or MEAPs — to the existing Iaas, PaaS, SaaS menagerie.
So … why the change? Sridhar sees two emerging trends. First, enterprise software companies (IBM, Sybase/SAP, Adobe etc.) want more mindshare among mobile developers. Second, mobile developers, who demand free tools, are forcing mobile services companies to find other ways to make money. Writing in the company’s blog, Kinvey VP Annie Bourne says these MEAPs:

Microsoft updates explanation of Azure outage

Microsoft updates explanation of Azure outage:

Microsoft just updated its explanation of what brought down Windows Azure in Europe for nearly 2 and a half hours last week.
In a blog post, Windows Azure General Manager Mike Neil basically said that when Microsoft added more compute capacity to meet increased demand in its West Europe sub-region, it did not match that new capacity with enough network devices to handle the additional connections needed.

The problem with SaaS metrics:

As a venture investor and board member, relentlessly in pursuit of companies that can set forth aggressive goals, and then exceed them. One of my portfolio company CEOs likes to use the term “consciously competent” — which means being successful by design, rather than by luck. Clearly, this is a goal most startups aspire to (although luck is good too!), and it requires carefully tracking metrics that accurately

Anyway, the “iPhone 5″ is going to be announced soon, except the problem is we know it’s not going to be called the iPhone 5.
Why? Because that’d just be silly. The next iPhone will be the sixth generation iPhone. The press has just been calling it the iPhone 5 for the last 9 months

Waterproof ECOXPRO Speaker Holds iPhone Safe Inside [Review]

Waterproof ECOXPRO Speaker Holds iPhone Safe Inside [Review]:

In the shower, or on the beach, the ECOXPRO will keep your iPhone safe. Photo Charlie Sorrel (CC BY-NC-SA 3.0)

It has the word “cox” in the name, and you can play with it whilst naked in the bathroom, but that’s where the childish jokes end. The ECOXPRO is a waterproof speaker with a snug and safe chamber inside that will fit your iPhone or iPod, along with your cash and keys, all the while blasting out the tunes to everyone trying to relax on the beach.

The ECOXPRO runs on three AA batteries for up to 30 hours, will stand up straight, and has clamps to close the case along with a pressure equalization valve to stop anything getting sucked inside or blowing out. It comes in black and orange, and a detachable carabiner and strap let you clip it to anything.

The Good

This thing is sturdy. From the hinges and clamps to the oversized volume/power knob, it feels like you can trust it in the depths. The interior net pocket holds the iPhone, and an internal cable hooks up to the headphone socket. You can also let your coins and keys jangle around in there, making it a great solution for solo beachgoing: you can keep all your valuables with you as you swim.
The sound is fine. It’s not hi-fi, but neither is it tinny. It’s more than loud enough to hear podcasts in the shower, and to annoy other beach-goers. And for camping, it might just be ideal.
Finally, a pass-through headphone socket lets you use this as a massively oversized waterproof walkman.

Sure, you could put your keys in here too, but things might get a little scratchy. Photo Charlie Sorrel (CC BY-NC-SA 3.0)

The Bad

There’s really nothing wrong with the ECOXPRO. My complaints concern the design decisions. I would prefer a rechargeable internal battery to the replaceable AAs (carrying an extra battery charger on a trip is a pain), and some kind of separation between the iPhone and your other valuables would help stave off scratches.
Also, there’s no way to control your music other than opening the thing up. The only external control is volume. Given that the iPhone can be controlled by its headphone cable, and that you have indeed plugged one into it, this seems like an obvious feature.

The Verdict

I’d buy this if I spent a lot of time at the beach. You could use it as a shower radio, too, but the effort of loading it up and then removing the phone/MP3 player or whatever after each shower makes a dedicated model seem better (or you could just slip your JamBox into a ziploc bag).
But if you treat it as a waterproof safety box for your gear, one which has the bonus of a built-in speaker, then you’ll love it. And it only costs $80.

The basic guideline for a Nobel Prize in Literature is that the work signifies, “the greatest benefit on mankind [and heads] in an ideal direction.”  While you certainly cannot encapsulate the full impact of this definition in one short paragraph, the general spirit of this guideline is arguably embodied in an excerpt from the 2010 Nobel Prize Literature winner The Storyteller by Mario Vargas Llosa, which invokes powerful questions of humanity:

gamigo Eight million Gamigo account passwords leaked
While German MMO website Gamigo announced it had been hacked back in March of this year, it wasn’t known to what extent user details were compromised. Now however, it’s been confirmed that over eight million account passwords and email addresses were stolen, with the details being made available on the Inside Pro forum.
At the time Gamigo did recommend that its users change their passwords to secure their accounts, but the problem comes from password reuse. It’s very likely that those same Gamigo players have the same email and password on other accounts – if you fall into this category, it’s recommended you change all corresponding details on all services.

Gamigo: Leaking all over your shoes
Since the data has been freely available on the Inside Pro forum for nearly a month, it’s likely more than a few individuals have had a play with the data, seeing what exactly it allows them to access. It’s thought that within the account list, there are over three million Gmail, Hotmail and Yahoo! addresses, most of them Americans. There’s also 2.4 million German accounts, as well as 1.3 million French. According to analysis by PwnedList, a company that specialises in compromised emails, the list also contains many corporate email accounts too, including ones from IBM, Siemens, Deutsche Bank and several more.

There’s really nothing wrong with the ECOXPRO. My complaints concern the design decisions. The Future of Prestigious Awards for Video Games – Pulitzer Prize, Noble Prize, Etc…:

When will video games be taken seriously?  When video games (or their creators, rather) take themselves seriously…

An US-based video game lab is taking this one step further, using video games to gauge the technological capabilities of students.  According to the press release on Market Watch:
A new video game design lab will research and develop compelling video games that engage students in innovative ways and provide data on students’ comprehension of the core skills deemed critical by states for college and the 21st century workplace.
The lab – GLASS Lab – will be based in Redwood City at EA’s headquarters, strategically situated in the Bay Area, just a short drive from Silicon Valley.  GLASS stands for the Games, Learning and Assessment Lab and received donations from major foundations – John D. and Catherine T. Chilean Game Company Needs Investors – Creating an Audio-Based Game for the Blind

Chilean Game Company Needs Investors – Creating an Audio-Based Game for the Blind:

IguanaBee is a company based in Chile that was started just one year ago.  The company already created three mobile games, a trading card game, and an audio game.  The audio game prototype was showcased at GDC this year, and I gotta say, the online demo is awesome.  It’s not just the blind who will gravitate toward IguanaBee’s innovative game.  The demo for Voices in the Dark – Voces en la Oscuridad – is filled with creativity and an action-packed sequence focused solely upon audio cues.

Eight million Gamigo account passwords leaked

Eight million Gamigo account passwords leaked:

gamigo Eight million Gamigo account passwords leaked

If you’re worried that your email address might have been part of this list, you can check on the PwnedList site with its simple tool.

Wikipad gaming tablet detailed

Wikipad gaming tablet detailed:

In what looks like more of an assault on the handheld gaming industry rather than the tablet marketplace, Wikipad has been talking about its self titled first product, the Wikipad gaming tablet, giving up the goods on its internal and external features.
Th1 10.1 inch tablet weighs in at just 560 grams and is less than 9mm thick, with a display resolution of 1,280 x 800. On the inside, it’ll be powered by an Nvidia Tegra 3 T30 running at 1.4Ghz. This features four processing cores and will be paired up 1GB of DDR2 memory at 1066MHz. While this is far from a monstrous hardware setup, it’s more powerful than the Google Nexus 7, which features the slower T30L chip.
