Smart watches

Smartwatches have still yet to really engage the mainstream audiences. In fact, no one is currently shipping a smartwatch that has really interested anyone other than the technology enthusiast (re: geek).
The Strata is clearly a complete thought in terms of design, compared to the review we did of the developer kit. This sport watch is made to be water resistant and offers a much sleeker design, without changing the actual layout of the watch. The buttons are all essentially in the same place, and it even uses the same charging pins on the bottom that double as JTAG debug pins. The watch face itself is a metallic ink that is reflective in the sun. The screen is always on, and if the developer watch was any indicator, has great battery life despite that decision.

Socialbot experiment collects 250GB of data from clueless Facebook users

, Facebook. Every day its hundreds of millions of users post updates, upload pictures, and tag to their hearts’ content while paying nary a mind to the site’s privacy settings. And as we’ve seen numerous times before, the data being shared is precisely the type bad guys need to compromise Facebook (and other) accounts.
In an experiment at the University of British Columbia, Canadian researchers showed just how easy it is to harvest data on the world’s biggest social network. The team set up a legion of 102 socialbots — autonomous digital servants

Microsoft points finger at Waledac dev: he worked at a firewall and antivirus company

Before Microsoft and its collaborators took it down last year, the Waledac botnet was one of the most prolific spam machines on the internet. Although fewer than 100,000 computers had been infected (some estimates have the figure as low as 41,000), the network was pumping out 1.5 billion spam messages per

Android smartphones implicated in new botnet

we have been accustomed to the uncomfortable fact that botnets lurk in the more unseemly corners of the intertubes. These networks of interconnected computers are used to carry out DDoS attacks and spend spam without the owner’s knowledge. What may come as a surprise, is that security researchers have now pointed the finger at Android smartphones as a new component of botnets. Is it finally time to look suspiciously at that phone in your hand?

This report comes by way of Microsoft researcher Terry Zink, who posits that Android phones are being used to send spam from Yahoo! mail servers. There is no way currently to know who is

Sun Power: Solar Chargers That Light Up Your Gadgets

Gadgets like smartphones and gaming devices help us stay connected and entertained on the go, but keeping their batteries charged can be challenging when you aren’t near an electrical outlet.
Portable solar chargers are one solution for keeping your gadgets juiced, especially if you plan on spending an extended amount of time in the great outdoors. They’ll also help you reduce your carbon footprint by using natural energy rather than electricity.

This week, I tested the Solio Bolt and Powertraveller Powermonkey Explorer, two solar chargers that can recharge portable electronics such as cellphones, handheld GPS devices and e-book readers by drawing energy from the sun.
The $70 Bolt is easy to set up, but doesn’t hold as much power as the Powermonkey, and it has some design flaws. The Powermonkey is more expensive at $89, and has more parts to it, but it’s worth it since it has a larger battery and works even when the sky is slightly cloudy.

swiftkey3 touchscreen

Typing on touchscreen smartphones with small virtual keyboards can be challenging. But various keyboard apps are available that try to make the task easier. For Android users, Swype was an early entrant in this category — it allows you to type words by dragging your finger from letter to letter in one continuous motion. It sounds crazy, but it works. That said, if you prefer the more traditional method of pecking at individual keys, there are options for you, too.

Data Mining

What is Data Mining?

Data mining, or knowledge discovery, is the computer-assisted process of digging through and analyzing enormous sets of data and then extracting the meaning of the data. Data mining tools predict behaviors and future trends, allowing businesses to make proactive, knowledge-driven decisions. Data mining tools can answer business questions that traditionally were too time consuming to resolve. They scour databases for hidden

Microsoft Launches New Surface Tablets With Windows 8

In a watershed moment for Microsoft, the company announced today that it’s launching its own brand of tablets to go head to head with the Apple iPad and the myriad of Android tablets.
Unveiled at an event in Los Angeles hosted by Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer, the new Windows 8-based Microsoft Surface tablets are designed for work and play and will come in two models: A Windows 8 RT version and a Windows 8 Pro model.

The consumer-focused Windows 8 RT Surface is the first PC with a VaporMg magnesium case and measures only 0.37

Data Warehousing Technology: Focus on Clinical Warehousing

This is the summary of a talk I gave as part of a workshop on Clinical Data Warehousing, at the American Medical Informatics Association (AMIA) Fall Symposium at Orlando, Florida, Nov 8th, 1998.
Introduction
  • A Data Warehouse is a collection of data that reflects all aspects of an organization's operations
  • A Data Mart deals with a single aspect of the data.

Universal dock adapter

LM fomr Langehorn (is that how you spell it?) gave this product a 1 star review because this universal dock adapter did not work for his 1st gen iPhone dock, or that was my understanding of the review. Also noted was that the reviewer held a degree in mechanical engineering and opened up the possibility of this adapter being designed for a different dock.

The new iPhone 3G is slightly bigger than the first generation. Not by much, but to hold the 3G and GPS radios, as well as a larger battery to power these, it needed to be. So, being someone with a degree, you should understand that there is not way the iPhone 3G will fit in the dock if you make it smaller. For that, you need to make it larger, as many have done with a dremel or sandpaper.

Oracle survey revenue loss

A recent Oracle survey has found large enterprises are losing 13% of revenue due to insufficient data management, but some are skeptical of such a high number.
The survey of 333 North American executives asked questions around data growth and management, ultimately concluding companies are being deluged with data and aren't able to properly handle it. The 13% figure, however, would mean a $1 billion company is losing $130 million per year due to poor data management, and that has raised some eyebrows.

samsung galaxy flgship

Just a couple of days ago the international variant of Samsung’s flagship Galaxy S III received a “stability” update that also removed the universal search function. This feature grants users to search through local files using the Google Search application on the phone, as well as the usual Google results.
Apparently the removal on this feature in the last software update was “inadvertent” and will be restored to users in a future update.

pc tool antivirus

With PC Tools AntiVirus Free, you are protected against basic cyber threats attempting to gain access to your PC. Don't risk going online without protection.

If your PC gets infected, viruses may attempt to spread to your friends, family and associates by accessing your email contacts and other PCs within your network. A computer virus may also create a backdoor that allows hackers to access files on your PC, launch attacks against other computers or websites, or send SPAM email.

Waterfox | The fastest 64-Bit variant of Firefox!
Waterfox is a 64-Bit version of Firefox. The Firefox source code is taken and compiled to run specifically for 64-Bit Windows computers. To make Waterfox stand out a bit more, it’s compiled with optimizations so that it will run more efficiently and faster than just compiling Firefox as a 64-Bit program. For some people with older systems, the 64-Bit version loads quicker and is much more responsive than the 32-Bit build.

HP omni 27

The Omni 27 is HP's latest all-in-one that shares many aesthetic characteristics with the TouchSmart 520 we recently reviewed, despite being in a different class. Inside we find a third-generation Intel Core i5-3550S Ivy Bridge processor clocked at 3.0GHz, 8GB of DDR3 memory, a 2TB Hitachi hard drive spinning at 7,200 RPM, Radeon HD 6550A graphics and Beats Audio. There's also an HDMI-in port so you could use this display as an HDTV to watch cable programming from a set-top box or play console games.

whatsapp manager

Thanks to a tip off we've noticed that the Whatsapp Messenger app for iPhone is free to download, at least for today. We're not sure how long this deal is for, so to take advantage of this and grab it now!
We know this deal applies to the UK, The US and The Netherlands (I checked) but we're not sure about other regions, so just give it a shot. Whatsapp usually sells for $0.99 or equivalent, and while that's already not a huge amount, free is better right... RIGHT?

Bing's big break

Bing is a search engine that cares about design and aesthetic, and not only is it better than Google, at least in my opinion, it's also so much less invasive than Google's increasingly creepy services.
It seems like most people who take the time to really use Bing and adjust to what it has to offer feel the same way that I do. But it's still facing an uphill climb, and there's a lot of hostility some places. Thanks to Windows 8, though, 2012 really could be the year that starts to change.
Windows 8 is going to be the first time that Microsoft has really integrated its online services with its operating system on the same scale as Google or Apple. For the first time, some of Microsoft's really superb, and sometimes obscure, services will be front and center.
Microsoft's Online Services Devision gets a lot of hate from some investors, and up until now that's kind of been a fair assessment; as far as returns go, it's just been a massive money sink. Yet Microsoft has held on to it, steadily improving and expanding, and pouring even more money into it. Microsoft is one of the few companies that has the resources and willpower for the long term, and there's no better example of that than its online offerings.

Solarwind Manager

In an enterprise situation, making sure you have the right solution to manage and check your storage set-up is critical. While some software products are convoluted and confusing, SolarWinds has developed a product that aims not only to provide a robust set of features to the professional user, but to do so with a relatively easy set-up and intuitive interface.

xbox kinnect

So let's say you are playing a game with the Kinect add-on for the Xbox 360 console. You are waving your hands or moving your body around while you play, for example, Dance Central. Chances are you feel a little tired after all of that activity. You may be wondering exactly how many calories you have burned while playing a Kinect game.

Microsoft 2013

Microsoft announced the first major details of Office 2013 earlier this week, and of course, a version of the office software suite will be released for Windows 8. That means it will work with all of the various Windows 8-based notebooks and tablets that will be touch screen enabled.
In a new post on the Office Next blog, Microsoft gives a lot of information on how it has made Office 2013 work on touch screen-based hardware. Microsoft concentrated its efforts on five areas: touch responsiveness, touch targeting, selecting text and objects, typing, and commanding.
In terms of making Office 2013 responsive to touch gestures, Microsoft says:

Asus

Instead of breaking new ground in performance, Ivy Bridge improves efficiency, marking the arrival of Intel's 22nm design process which uses new 3D transistors. This allows the flagship quad-core 3.5GHz Core i7-3770K to consume less power than the more modest Sandy Bridge i5-2500K.

Google nexus7

Google has released a number of Nexus branded "hero" smartphones in the past, but the new Google Nexus 7 is the first ever tablet to bear the Google Nexus name. Built by Asus, the Nexus 7 also has the distinction of being the first device to run the Android 4.1 "Jelly Bean" operating system.

While the Nexus 7 offers nothing to consumers that can't be found elsewhere - save for Jelly Bean - it offers a number of refinements to the Android tablet experience in terms of both software and hardware. And it does it all at a sub-$200 price point that is meant to dethrone Amazon's Kindle Fire as the

Macbook Air

Steve Jobs unveiled the first MacBook Air in early 2008 to mixed reviews, but a series of redesigns and hardware refreshes through the years have resulted in a product line that has had a huge impact on the industry. PC makers have struggled to match the Air’s extremely thin and simplistic design, prompting Intel to announce the ultrabook initiative at Computex in 2011.

motorola hd reveiws

The Motorola Atrix HD is the follow-up to last year's Atrix 4G and Atrix 2 smartphones for AT&T. This year, the Atrix gains a much improved display, a faster processor, and better build over the older phones.

Germany bans Motorola Android phones due to Microsoft patent

The patent battles between Google-owned Motorola and Microsoft continue in Germany. Today, Judge Andreas Voss ruled that Motorola's Android-based smartphones are in violation of a File Allocation Table (FAT) patent owned by Microsoft.
