The Latest on the PS4 and Xbox 720

The Latest on the PS4 and Xbox 720:
watchdogs screen 02tcm1953800 22333.nphd 300x160 The Latest on the PS4 and Xbox 720You can kiss those dreams for the announcement of next gen consoles at this year’s E3 good-bye.  Despite the lack of comment from Sony and Microsoft representatives, there were overt hints (oxymoron, I know) about upcoming consoles.  Even independent publishers came right out and said their demos featured games for next gen consoles.
The “overt hints” to which I referred come from the trailers and demos that utilize graphics beyond the capabilities of our current systems.  One of the most impressive trailers was from Ubisoft for the game Watch Dogs, set for release next year.  Since the graphics are overtly next gen material and not all of the consoles were announced, it’s rather self-evident that at least one next gen console will make its debut during 2013.

Why all the secrecy surrounding new consoles?  Well, Sony and Microsoft wouldn’t want to diminish their current potential for sales by prematurely announcing the “PS4” or “Xbox 720.”  After all, who would buy a PS3 or 360 if next gens were on their way?  In fact, I myself waited so long to get a PS3 I figured I might as well wait for the PS4, hoping it would be backwards compatible so I could play some of the exclusive PS3 titles I missed out on.  It seems as though my time spent waiting was in vain since rumors indicate the PS4 won’t be backwards compatible…How frustrating.

Although Sony and Microsoft reps are silent when it comes to new systems, Ubisoft’s co-founder and CEO “noted that the extended life of the current systems has muted publisher interest in launching new franchises,” according to the CNBC article.  Many of PlayStation’s widely anticipated releases are set for release this summer, with Metal Gear Solid Rising, Hitman: Absolution, and BIT.TRIP Runner 2 coming out in November and two anticipated games coming out after the holiday rush – Final Fantasy Versus XIII and The Last Guardian, both rumored for release on December 31st.
While nothing substantial about the “PS4” and “Xbox 720” was discussed, the newest graphic engine is widely anticipated.  The demo video for this engine – Unreal Engine 4 – looks incredible, almost like a movie.

I can’t wait to see what these improvements will bring to video games…especially long lasting series that will see their newest installments released on next gen consoles.
