ZTE Grand X: Redefining medium range:
I’ve been meeting with ZTE on and off for the past few years to play with their latest handsets. Normally they trot out a decent, affordable but decidedly low-end handset like the F930 or the ZTE racer. Nice but nothing to write home about. But it’s clear from conversations with the company that they have a deep-seated desire to escape the medium range, or at the very least redefine what “medium
range” means.
Which brings us to the portentously named ZTE Grand X, the unveiling of which I was invited to last night. Unlike previous ZTE handsets I’ve played with, the ZTE Grand X isn’t “good for what it is” or “ok if you consider the price”. It’s just “good”. The dual-core 4.3-inch screen smartphone opens up high-end mobile video and gaming experiences to the middle market.
Technically the ZTE Grand X is no slouch and combines an NVIDIA Tegra 2 dual-core chipset with Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich), a 4.3-inch 16 million colour Sharp screen (960×540) and cinematic surround-sound Dolby Mobile Sound technology. All this in a handset that is less than £200 on Pay As You Go.
Wanting to test the NVIDIA Tegra processor, I ran through a couple of First Person Shooters and Racing games and was impressed by the performance. HD video playback was also remarkably smooth.
ZTE have also partnered with British rap star Professor Green, to be their official ambassador for ZTE. The Professor featured in ZTE’s official ‘un-boxing’ video for the launch of the ZTE Grand X smartphone and will be popping into their stand a Stratford City.
The ZTE Grand X will be available on contract through Phones 4u and Virgin Media stores across the UK from beginning of August. Availability will be announced near the time.
